Adaptive Planning Founder Rob Hull likes to say that he’s Adaptive Planning’s longest-term customer.
“We take full advantage of all the possible uses of our application,” he often says. “Many of our new feature ideas have resulted from our own experience with the product and our desire to do more and more with it.”
Here at Adaptive, we don’t just sell our CPM software suite. We depend on it ourselves.
Here are four specific ways Adaptive Planning teams internally use the company’s own solution.
1. General Overview
Adaptive Planning is a well-known advocate of making cloud application integration easier for all businesses. Automatic integration with NetSuite brings over actual data and transactions. The forecast is updated multiple times per month and we model a complete set of integrated financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow). All employees with budget responsibility have access and are accountable for their department figures.
2. Multiple Instances
We use three instances to manage our planning and forecasting.
– The Sales Forecasting instance is integrated with Salesforce and planning is done at the sales rep level. This integration feature is extremely popular, and is one of the many reasons why Salesforce recently decided to make an investment in Adaptive Planning.
– The HR instance is used to track PTO, option grant, and compensation by employee.
– The Core Financial Planning instance consolidates data from the sales forecasting and HR instances and contains additional expense details and the integrated financial statements.
3. Sales & Revenue Planning
Our sales forecasting instance is embedded in Salesforce. We pull detailed opportunity data weekly and the VP of Sales makes top-down adjustments for the next two quarters. For the longer-term plan, we forecast bookings, which are then automatically spread into revenue. We plan by product, channel, and sales territory, and we track sales rep performance – what they’ve booked and what they’re paid.
Reports and Dashboards
The monthly board reports book is automatically sent to PowerPoint. Ongoing variance reports are also generated and waterfall charts show the change in metrics over time. Executives and LOB managers view dashboards with operating metrics and KPIs in Discovery. Budget managers track trends, then update the forecast accordingly.
